2007 Field Day:

On Saturday, June 23, 2007, thousands of ham radio operators across the country displayed their emergency communications capabilities during the annual Field Day sponsored by the ARRL (American Radio Relay League).

Members of the PVR Amateur Radio Club gathered at a selected site to participate in FD where operators made as many radio contacts, using various bands and modes, with hams at similar sites in other states for a 24-hour period.

For the first time experience, PVR did very well, making more than 200 radio contacts.

Weather Isn't the Only Hazard:

Sometimes when activated to go to a site for Storm Spotting, hazardous weather isn't the only hazard ham radio operators might meet. Just ask Roger, KC9HHH, about his encounter with a common Wisconsin hazard ... whitetail deer!

The Flood of June, 2008:

On Sunday, June 8, it began to rain ... and it rained ... and it rained until at last it stopped with northern Iowa and central and southwest Wisconsin completely flooded.

The communities of Viola, LaFarge, Avoca, Lone Rock, and Spring Green experienced floods the likes of which they had never seen before.

In Sauk County, flood waters washed a new channel between Lake Delton and the Wisconsin River resulting in the lake being completely drained.

Here are some photos showing the flood waters.

Field Day 2008:

On a bright and sunny Saturday morning, June 28, members of the PVR Amateur Radio Club assembled at the field day site to begin setting up stations and antennas.

When Field Day officially began, our site was up and ready to go.

With thoughts of a perfect day for communicating, it didn't last long. In the afternoon, storm clouds begn to build, and shortly a terrific wind suddenly blew in ... and our tent sites became airborne. Unfortunately, we have no photographic record of the destruction. The aluminum poles were bent, the cover material was torn ... it was a real mess.

Our Emergency Communications trailer, however, rode out the storm in grand style, and rather than have a 4A station, we became a 2A. Despite the lack of two transmitters, we made many contacts with other stations throughout the United States.
